Masterclass - Frost Protection Strategies with Hans Loder
The masterclass is being held at The Mansion House, Shuttleworth College on Friday, 24 February, 2012, starting at 10:00 and finishing at 16:00.
This Masterclass will look at 4 key areas of frost management:
• The influence of climate and weather on frost; ways of monitoring these influences and assessing their potential impact on vineyards.
• Site frost susceptibility, site risk assessment and vineyard design.
• Passive and active frost protection measures and managing a frost event on the night.
• Quality control and environmental considerations; the role of collecting and managing climate, weather and frost data to help with localised frost protection planning.
Hans Loder is qualified in geology and viticulture, and is an expert of international standing in the development and application of frost protection strategies for vineyards. During his time as Assistant Vineyard and Technical Manager at Katnook Estate (located in the heart of South Australia's Coonawarra region) Hans was involved in a number of regionally-funded extension projects including the compilation of a Frost Protection "User Guide" for Limestone Coast Irrigators.
In 2010 he was awarded the Limestone Coast Emerging Leader Award and given the opportunity to travel internationally to see how frost affected other regions and investigate frost protection options beyond irrigation. His findings are being compiled into a resource for vinegrowers.
